The squadron head, Mesnilgrand, was a brave man whose military career was cut short by his attachement to the emperor. When he visits his aged father, his father throws a dinner and invites all of this friends. They insult the church and they laugh at women etc. The course hilarity of the men as they stuff their faces will be cut short when Mesnilgrand Junior tells his friends of guilty love and of the ultimate outrage that he has experienced.
Le chef d'escadron Mesnilgrand est un brave dont la carrière militaire fut brisée par son attachement à l'Empereur. Lorsqu'il visite son vieux père, celui-ci, d'avare, se fait prodigue et offre à ses amis des dîners mémorables où l'on insulte l'Église, où l'on invoque en riant les femmes et les faits d'armes que l'on a parfois rencontrés ensemble. L'hilarité grivoise de ces hommes de garde, qui « bouffent » du curé en même temps que les mets délicieux du vieux Mesnilgrand sera pourtant brisée ce soir lorsque Mesnilgrand fils narrera à ses camarades l'amour coupable, et l'outrage ultime dont il fut le témoin.
