A bestseller in France when it was first published in 2001, in the UK Bord de Mer was regarded as a difficult, controversial book and was not published in English until 2010, after being championed by translator Adriana Hunter. It was the first release from Peirene Press, an imprint specialising in novella-length, cinematic fiction, and there is no doubt it is a challenging, heart-wrenching read, but it is also a classic that will bear repeated readings.
